Sustainability at IKP
Sustainability at the Department of Chemical Engineering
The world's growing population needs clean water, food, energy, and medicines. And we have to produce this in a sustainable way, to assure sound use of the earth's resources and avoid pollution and devastating emissions. At the Department of Chemical Engineering at NTNU, we contribute to the development of energy-efficient and sustainable process solutions that ensure good utilization of resources and protect the environment.
Carbon Capture
To be able to stop the climates changes, it is essential to reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. This can for instance be done by removing CO2 emissions from incineration of waste and production of cement and steal.
At IKP we focus on solvent-based absorption, adsorption and use of membranes for separation of CO2.
Clean Hydrogen and Ammonia
In the transport, energy and industry sector, fossil fuels need to be replaced by sustainable alternatives. Production of hydrogen and ammonia without emissions of CO2 will play an important role in this transition.
At IKP we focus on production of green and blue hydrogen and ammonia.
Circular Chemical Engineering
In a sustainable society, we will have to manage the use of the world's resources in a sustainable way and ensure recovery of necessary and critical elements.
At IKP we focus on water treatment, chemical conversion of plastics, and recirculation and recovery of metals from EV batteries.
Health and Food Production
To ensure healthy lives and well-being for all, we need to be able to diagnose illnesses and treat them with medicines. In addition, we need to contribute to sustainable food production, both on land and from the ocean.
At IKP we focus on nanomedincine, system biology and production of fertilizers.
Biochemical Engineering
In a zero-emission society, use of renewable biological raw materials and biochemical production processes will be important, for instance for production of bio-fuels, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food and feed ingredients.
At IKP we focus on bio-refinery, and design and operation of bio-reactors.
Digitalization and Optimization
A prerequisite for all sustainable processes is digitalization and optimization.
At IKP we focus on designing resource and energy efficient chemical processes, by utlizing artificial intelligence, machine learning and digital twins.
