About active aging

Demographic changes, with an increasing proportion of older people and correspondingly fewer people at work, will affect all sectors of society. To ensure that older adults stay active, participate in society, contribute, and avoid loneliness and isolation, we must adopt a holistic and cross-sectoral approach. Our research group therefore aims to address these challenges through innovation in research and education within the following topics:

  • Built environment and accessibility: Explore how design and infrastructure can support mobility, safety, and quality of life for an aging population.
  • Social participation and inclusion: Explore and create opportunities for older people to participate in community activities and combat social isolation.
  • Promote cognitive and physical engagement via technological solutions: Investigate the potential of using assistive technology to support older people.
  • Technology adoption: Explore attitudes of older adults and caregivers toward digital technology and identify key barriers and success factors for their implementation.
  • Health Promotion and disease Management: Identify and develop strategies to improve physical and mental health, prevent diseases, and manage chronic conditions.
  • Policy and governance: Study the impact of policies and governance structures on the quality of life of older people, including the implementation of age-friendly initiatives.

We collaborate with researchers from different disciplines such as architecture, psychology, public health, nursing, medicine, computer technology and engineering. We will also engage with diverse sectors such as industry, civil society, and policy makers. Our overall goal is to contribute to the development of social, environmental and economic sustainability at the individual, group and societal level. The interaction between humans and the environment, both physical and technological, is central. The design of age-friendly communities and services must be seen in the context of people's prerequisites and their need to be active participants in their own lives and in society in general.
