About

About

I am an Associate Professor of Comparative Literature. I have a Ph.D. from the University of California-Davis (2018) and have managed research projects funded by The Icelandic Research Fund (IRF) and the University of Iceland.

Research interests

  • Comparative Literature; World Literature; Red World Literature
  • Latin American, American, and Nordic Literature with an emphasis on the interwar period (1918-1939)
  • Critical Theory; Marxism; the Frankfurt School; Uneven and Combined Development; Internationalism
  • Theory of the Novel; Realism; Peripheral Realism

Publications

My current book project is a comparative study of interwar proletarian literature. The project examines the appearances of the proletarian novel in cultural contexts that were—during the interwar period—peripheral to the cultural center of the emerging socialist second world in Moscow and the core locations of Westernized hegemony in Paris, London, and New York. Working across national and regional contexts in Latin America, the Nordic Countries, and the USA, the study focuses on the emergence of a new proletarianized class that galvanized the making of local proletarian literature.

I am currently working on two editorial projects on Red World Literature. My papers have appeared in Science and Society, A Contracorriente, and edited anthologies such as Working-Class Literature(s): Historical and International Perspectives and Arbejderlitteratur Internationale perspektiver og forbindelser.

Teaching

In the past, I have taught various courses on the history of Western World Literature from the ancient period onwards, as well as thematic courses on 20th-century realism, the social novel, literature and revolution, and committed literature. My areas of specialization include Literature of the Americas, 20th-century American and Latin American literature, Proletarian Literature, Realism, Critical Theory with an emphasis on Marxism, and World Literature.

I am interested in supervising MA and Ph.D. students. Please contact me to discuss potential topics.
