About

CV

I am a political scientist with specialization in comparative politics (Europe, Eurasia, and Sub-Saharan Africa) and research methodology. Broadly speaking, my research focus lies in public opinion towards European integration, the impact of social identities, and party politics. My research agenda includes three lines of inquiry.

First, my research examines radical right and radical left party politics in the EU, and the recent rise of populism and nationalism. I am interested in what factors condition citizens to vote for radical parties, including economic preferences, hostility towards globalization, and psychological factors, such as the authoritarian personality dynamic, social dominance orientation, and anomie.

Along with Andrea Wagner (MacEwan University), I am currently building a public opinion dataset of populist attitudes in North America, Europe, and Latin America: the Varieties of Populist Attitudes (VoPA) survey. Our dataset distinguishes between anti-establishment and authoritarian populist attitudes and tracks public responses to polarizing issues, such as COVID regulations, the Freedom Convoy in Canada, the Capitol Hill Riots in the US, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The dataset serves as the foundation for a book manuscript, (currently under contract with Lynne Rienner Publishers).

Second, I am interested in how regional identity (i.e., subnational identity) impacts public attitudes towards European integration, especially in Spain and France. My work in this realm is rooted in social identity theory and in-group/out-group dynamics. My prior research has shown that many European citizens have an exclusionary regional identity that makes them hostile to European integration. Third, given my training as a comparativist, I am interested in how well established theories of social identity and party politics travel to other global contexts, such as Sub-Saharan Africa and Eurasia. I am currently working on a project that looks at public opinion across Sub-Saharan Africa towards Chinese investment on the continent.

I hold a PhD in political science from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill (2012) and a BA in political science and history from the University of Florida (2004). Prior to joining NTNU, I was an Associate Professor at North Carolina Central University (2013 – 2020).
