About

Nils Petter Aspvik holds a M.A. and a PhD in sports science (sociology) from NTNU. He has been working at the Department of Sociology and Political Science since 2008, and is currently Academic Programme Director for the  Physical Education and Sport with Teacher Education.

Aspvik's research interest is on skill and performance development in sport, with a particular focus on sport and health among young athletes - athletes' welfare. Relevant research questions Aspvik works with are: how do young athletes experience an injury rehabilitation process, why do athletes train and compete despite beeing injured (in  pain), what is the attitude of using painkillers among athletes, why do athletes train and compete despite having mental fatigue (burned out), to what extent do athletes communicate health challenges (injury, pain, mental fatigue) to their significant others (coach, fellow athletes, family, friends)?

Aspvik also has a research interest related to physical activity and public health. He has extensive experience with objective measurement of physical activity using Actigraph accelerometers. Aspvik has for example been responsible for measuring physical activity in projects such as the Generation  100 study (Elderly and physical activity) and TESS (children, youth and physical activity).

Research

Aspvik researches various topics related to sports and health. The research concentrates particularly on youth sports and the transition from junior to senior level (elite sports). Some of the topics are pain culture, painkillers, burnout, and the coach-athlete relationship. In addition, Aspvik conducts research on physical activity, with a particular focus on the use of the Actigraph accelerometer (objective measurements). I.e., he has been responsible for the objective assessment of physical activity (Actigraph accelerometer) in the Generation 100 Study (Gen100), as well as in the Trondheim Early Secure Study (TESS).

The Trondheim Early Secure Study

The goal of the study is to determine the prevalence and course of common mental disorders, physical inactivity, eating behaviours and adiposity, and to detail potential etiological factors.

The Generation 100 Study

Comparing talent development environments of girls and boys in handball and ice hockey in Norway

Currently, there is little research on successful talent development environments (TDEs) focusing on girls. In response, the main aim of the present study was to compare TDEs of agespecific national teams for girls and boys in the Norwegian context

Embedded, embodied, enculturated, and enabling processes: The identification and evaluation of sporting talent by ice hockey coaches in Norwegian youth international teams.

The aim of this case study is therefore to explore how coaches of Norwegian youth ice hockey international teams identify and evaluate sporting talent within these structured settings. The data were generated using nine semi-structured interviews.

Are older adults physically active enough - A matter of assessment method? The generation 100 study.

The aim of the present study was to compare the adherence to the PA recommendation using both absolute and relative thresholds. Additionally, we aimed to report the reference values for overall PA in a large sample of Norwegian older adults.

Talent Development Environments in Football: Comparing the Top-Five and Bottom-Five-Ranked Football Academies in Norway

The aim of this study was to examine junior-elite football players' perception of their talent development environment by comparing clubs ranked as the top-five and bottom-five in the 2017 Norwegian academy classification.
