Cecilie Slinning Knudsen

About

I am a PhD student from 2023 to 2027 and on leave from my position as a university lecturer in Norwegian didactics at the Department of Teacher Education.

My doctoral research examines how pre-service teachers in Norway are prepared to teach early literacy, with a particular emphasis on phonological knowledge and its application in classroom practice. Drawing on my background in linguistics, the project explores how foundational linguistic understanding contributes to effective reading and writing instruction in the early years.

The dissertation consists of three related articles. The first investigates preservice teachers’ explicit and implicit knowledge of basic language structures through a national survey. The second analyses how these preservice teachers comment on an authentic students' text, offering insight into how linguistic understanding manifests in professional judgment. The third examines how teacher-education programmes represent and teach phonological constructs, providing a broader view of institutional approaches to early literacy preparation.

Through this work, the project seeks to illuminate the existing and needed knowledge base for teaching reading and writing in Norwegian primary schools. By bridging linguistic theory, teacher cognition, and pedagogical practice, the study aims to contribute to the development of more coherent and research-informed approaches to literacy education within teacher training.

I have a master’s degree in linguistics from NTNU, with a bachelor’s degree in languages with English and Nordic from Volda University College. I have also continued my education in Norwegian as a second language at NTNU.
