About

CV

Hajnalka Vaagen is Associate Professor at NTNU, with a scientific profile in decisions, uncertainty, operations management, and supply chains. She received her PhD in Quantitative Logistics from Molde University College in 2009. Currently she is also affiliated with the Norwegian School of Economics NHH as Associate Professor II. Earlier, she held senior researcher position at SINTEF Technology and Society and SINTEF Industry, within the research group operations research.  Vaagen is also a licensed engineer in the field of technology and chemistry of textiles, and has earlier held positions as a technical designer and has been an entrepreneur multiple times.

Main research topics

  1. Operations Risk management, Design problems in operations risk management:  Research interests are centered around two main challenges, both combining aspects of theory and industrial application. The first is focused on uncertainty management and flexibility in project-based production systems, with research into stochastic optimization-based approaches to project flexibility, and on the social-behavioural drivers of high-performing project teams in uncertain and dynamically changing projects. The second, mainly analytical research stream, has focus on portfolio and assortment optimization in design-based consumer goods industries. This also includes a stochastic optimization-based  demo-software to assess product ranking and the economy and risk of  assortments. In both contexts, design uncertainty has a documented high impact on planning and performance, and a large share of Vaagen's work is, therefore, summarised as design problems in operations risk management.
  2. Lean and flexible project delivery: This is merely empirically grounding analytics (EGA) research, linking insights from mathematical modeling and stochastics to empirical data (such as case study and field experiments) in the field of lean Construction and Lean Project Delivery. The aim is to extend the lean project delivery theory to a proactive approach to handling project uncertainty by bringing in insights from modelling research. This research is in collaboration with University of California Berkeley, Project Production Systems Laboratory P2SL, with Glenn Ballard, former director of the P2SL and founder of lean Construction Institute (LCI).
  3. Circular Economy, and Enabling Technologies driven sustainable transformation: This research stream includes two directions. First, work into innovation ecosystems, circular supply chains and proactive policy-oriented operations management approaches to handle the ocean plastic pollution problem (with focus on shipbuilding and fishing industries) (EU projects Blue Circular Economy BCE, Circular Nets CIRCNETS, and the NTNU SusRes project Sweet Spot). Second, research into the industrialisation of the advanced 3D knitting technology, a derivative of additive manufacturing with a cloud platform to directly and digitally connect multiple types of stakeholders, information and supply chain functions (SuSDesign, 3DKnit4CE).
