About

Hanna Musiol comes to Trondheim from Boston, where she taught in the English and American Studies programs at Northeastern University, the University of Massachusetts Boston, and Simmons College. Her research interests include American and Anglophone literatures, visual studies, archive and curation, public humanities, civic engagement, critical pedagogy, and critical theory, with emphasis on migration, environmental humanities / political ecology, human rights, and postcoloniality. She has published on literary and visual aesthetics and rights, and her work has appeared in ASAP/J, Journal of American Studies, DHQ, Oil Culture, Poetry and Global Climate Change, Human Rights and Literature, Writing Beyond the State, Environment, Space, Place, Teaching Postcolonial Environmental Literature and Media, Technologies of Human Rights Representation, and Discursive Framing of Human Rights. She also associate-edited Cultural Studies: An Anthology (Blackwell) and was the creator and curator of the (Im)Migrant Experience Initiative (IEI), a digital archive devoted to the preservation of narratives of migration and displacement at the University of Massachusetts Boston. She is currently a Faculty Affiliate at the Human Rights Institute (HRI), SUNY Binghamton.

Musiol is a recipient of the PHRGE Research Fellowship at the Northeastern University School of Law, Visiting Research Fellowship at the Law and Theory Lab at the University of Westminster, and Human Rights Institute Fellowship at SUNY Binghamton. Between 2016 and 2018, she had served on the Project Research Board of "Cruising the 1970s" (EU's HERA & HO2020), and she was a member of the "Borderscapes, Memory, Migration" (2015-2017), Writing Urban Places (2019-2023); ANEST Environmental Storytelling (2022-2024);  and ENVIROCEN projects (Nordic Council of Ministers, 2022-2023). Her current research networks include CIRCUL’ARTs (Critical Pedagogies, Inclusive Art Forms, and Urban Sustainability) COST Action; Narrating Sustainability (NTNU TSO Sustainability); Against Research Monoculture (The Gjærevoll Centre for Biodiversity Foresight Analyses; with Caitlin Mandeville and Libe García Zarranz), and NTNU Environmental Humanities and TransLit research groups. Musiol frequently collaborates with Literature for Inclusion led by Gulabuddin Sukhanwar at the Trondheim House of Literature.

She teaches a range of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in American studies, Anglophone literatures, visual and cultural studies, and critical theory, and environmental humanities. She has also developed several transdisciplinary pedagogical collaborations with community and academic partners in Europe and the US, including Narrating the Global City (Boston / Trondheim); the global classroom law and literature pilot Just Fiction, co-taught with Alexandra Schultheis-Moore; Of Borders and Travelers in partnership with Kristen Over, Gianluca Gatta, Academic Guest Network / NTNU for Refugees, and the Trondheim Kommune; Environmental Humanities, Literature, and the “Arts of Living on a Damaged Planet” taught in collaboration with the Kunsthall Trondheim, the Academic Guest Network / NTNU for Refugees, the Trondheim Kommune, the Falstad Center, Sissel Bergh, Krista Caballero, Marco Armiero, Henry Mainsah, and Carl Martin Faurby; and Literature and (as?) Public Health (with Gemma Goodall, Tore Størvold, Ellen Foyn Bruun, Greg Seigworth, and others).
