Hans Jørgen Roven
Background and activities
Hans Jørgen Roven (born 1958) received his ‘sivilingeniør’ (MSc) degree in 1982 and the doctor technicae (dr. techn.) degree in physical metallurgy in 1989 from NTH, Norway. He is a professor at Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering, NTNU (since 1993), was vice-dean for the NTNU strategic area Materials (2008-2009) and leader of the latter since 2010. He was a plant metallurgist at Aker Stord AS (1983-84), research scientist at SINTEF Metallurgy (1984-90) and associate professor at NTH (1990-93). Roven has served as leader of FORMLAB-NTNU (1998-) and group leader for the NANO-SPD research at NTNU (2001-). He was at the University of Virginia, Light Metals Centre, as a postdoc in 1988/89, and a visiting professor at Colorado School of Mines (2001-2002), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2009-2010) and University of Ancona (2009). Roven served as deputy-chair at the Department of Metallurgy (1995-98), member of the National Advisory group to the Norwegian Research Council within Engineering Sciences (2004-05). He is also peer-reviewer to a National Research Council of a central European member state (2003-), peer- reviewer to the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) in the UK, the Natural Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Royal Society in the U.K. and to numerous international journals. In 2010, Roven was appointed a role as an International Expert and Panel Member by the European Research Council (ERC); evaluating starting and consolidator grants. He is a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Technology, NTVA (1999-), The Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences and Letters , DKNVS (2009-), the Materials Research Society, MRS (2007-), TMS (1991-), American Society for Metals ASM (1991-) and American Association for Advancement of Science, AAAS (2016-). In 2013, Roven was honored the 'Internalization Price' at NTNU. In regard to EU framework programs he has been in the Core Editor teams for three previous applications (2003-07). His research interests include physical metallurgy of light metals, SPD nanostructuring of metals, novel forming processes, recycling, rapid solidification, anisotropy and formability, in-situ plastic deformation, fatigue and the micro-/nanostructure characterization of materials. He was in May 2007 officially appointed Guest Professor to the Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) in China (2007-2013), in 2016 he was awarded Honorary Professor at Jiangsu University and 111- Foreign expert professor at Chongqing University, China. Roven has more than 160 papers published in international journals/ proceedings, one international patent and he has given more than 70 international presentations. His h-index shows an accelerated increase over the last 3-4 years. He is currently supervising 2 PhD students and has in the past supervised 7 postdocs, 8 (main supervisor) + 8 (co-supervisor) PhD students and ~100 MSc students. Roven has a long experience with international collaboration to USA, China, UK, France, Italy, Russia, Germany, Hungary and India. In 2010 he established 2 Joint Research Centres between NTNU and two different key universities in China and is the executive co-director of these two centres.
