Igor Devold
About
Leiv Igor Devold is a Norwegian and Polish film director, associate professor at NTNU, and the leader (since 2022) of the Norwegian Guild of Film Directors. His films have received a total of five Amanda nominations, including one for best director.
Devold has a diverse background, with partial Polish heritage, and he is bilingual. He obtained his master’s degree in film directing from the Polish National Film School in Łódź. Additionally, he holds a bachelor’s degree in media studies and a foundation course in social economics from the University of Oslo. He specialized in documentary directing at the Lillehammer University College.
Devold has received two honorable mentions at the Grimstad Short Film Festival, where he participated with six films. His short films have garnered international acclaim, and in 2009, he was awarded the Polish Minister of Culture’s scholarship for “Young Poland.”
His debut in Norwegian cinemas came in 2015 with the documentary “The Accidental Rock Star”. The film received nominations for best sound and editing at the Norwegian Film Awards. It won an Amanda Award for best editing and was also nominated for best Nordic documentary at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen. Furthermore, it secured the audience award for best Norwegian film at the Kosmorama International Film Festival in Trondheim, where it also received the Kanon Award for best sound.
Devold continued to make an impact with his documentary “Thea – Two Summers, One Winter” in 2017. The film explored the life of Norwegian journalist Thea Steen, who tragically passed away from cervical cancer in 2016. The film was viewed by over 350 000 people on TV2 in Norway and was also screened on Danish television. His works have been screened at various international festivals, including Annecy, Warsaw International Film Festival, Frameline, CPH:MIX, BIFF, Dubai, Beirut, IDFA, CPH:DOX, and over a 100 other festivals.
Before joining NTNU, Devold served as the head of the documentary department at The Norwegian TV-School in Lillehammer and was responsible for producing and directing films at the Norwegian Cancer Society. He currently is head of the board of Trondheim Art House Cinema “Cinemateket” and board member of the Union of Norwegian Film Workers. Previously, he was also on the board of the Norwegian Short Film Festival in Grimstad.
In his research time, Devold engages in artistic development work within the field of film directing, focusing on the feature film project “Norwegian Dream.” The film premiered as the opening film at the Kosmorama International Film Festival, and it was screened in Norwegian cinemas during the spring of 2023, selling more than 12 000 tickets. It also had its international premiere at Inside Out in Toronto on May 26th 2023 and has been showcased at several festivals, including Frameline, the worlds oldest queer film festival. Norwegian Dream received three Amanda Award Nominations for Best Male Lead, Best Screenplay and Best Director. The film has been sold to several territories including, US, Canada, France, UK, Spain, Germany, Poland, Austria and has had regular cinema-, digital- as well as DVD- release in several of these countries. It is available on HBO Max in the EU-11 countries.
The film itself revolves around Robert, a 19-year-old Polish immigrant working at a fish factory in Norway. As he grapples with his feelings for his colleague Ivar, the film delves into themes of love, identity, racism, intersectionality and acceptance. “Norwegian Dream” is a powerful coming-of-age drama that resonates with audiences, inviting them to explore vulnerability, queerness, and the complexities of human connection. The film’s journey has taken it to over 40 film festivals worldwide where it received international awards - including the Iris Prize for best male lead in Cardiff, Wales, as well as best cinematography at the "Young and film" festival in Poland. Through the widespread distribution and sales, audiences across the globe participate in the universal emotions it evokes.

2024 Main supervisor for Master's thesis in Film and video production, by Sondre Strømholm, NTNU. Title of master's thesis: "Editing emotions in real time. A practical-theoretical exploration of how editing in real time can affect the spectator's emotions".
