Jomar Tørset
About
I have worked with structural engineering for nearly 40 years through roles in design, research and development, project execution, management, and business development. My experience includes offshore and ocean space structures, floating structures, ships, bridges, and other critical infrastructure. This work has involved the analysis and design of offshore jackets, floating structures and vessels, the development of engineering software, and participation in a wide range of industrial projects.
Since 2015, I have been affiliated with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and previously Sør-Trøndelag University College (HiST) through teaching, supervision, research and development activities, and collaboration with industry. This has provided extensive experience with the interaction between engineering education, research, innovation, and industrial practice.
My professional background reflects the traditional connection between engineering education and industry. Throughout my career I have worked in multidisciplinary environments where collaboration between engineers, researchers, contractors, fabricators, operators, and authorities has been essential for successful project execution. This experience continues to influence my approach to education, research, and innovation.
Research and Development of Future Ocean Space Structures
My primary research and development interest is the design, operation, maintenance, and life-cycle management of future ocean space structures.

A central objective is to combine monitoring technologies, numerical modelling, artificial intelligence, and engineering experience to improve the design, operation, and maintenance of structures throughout their service life.
Particular emphasis is placed on understanding how knowledge gained from existing structures can be used to improve the next generation of ocean infrastructure.
Integration of Industrial Competence into Academia
An additional research and development interest concerns the interaction between academia and industry, and how industrial competence can contribute to engineering education, research, and innovation.
Engineering is a profession-oriented discipline where new knowledge is developed through the interaction of research, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. My work explores how experience from industrial projects can be integrated into higher education, how students can be exposed to real-world engineering challenges, and how industrial experience can stimulate new research questions and innovation activities.
This work is carried out through student projects, industry collaboration, problem-based learning, and the development of new educational approaches within engineering.
Student Projects and Innovation
Many research and development ideas have been explored through student projects at NTNU. More than 180 student group projects have addressed topics related to ocean space, artificial intelligence, sustainability, climate adaptation, infrastructure, and future engineering solutions.
The work also includes the development of concepts and initiatives related to marine industries, coastal development, and future infrastructure systems in coastal regions.
Structural Health Monitoring and Life Extension
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) has been a major area of activity in both teaching and research. The objective is to develop methods for real-time condition assessment, maintenance planning, and life extension of existing structures.
Research activities have included collaboration with industry partners and participation in projects related to smarter maintenance, infrastructure management, and the application of advanced monitoring technologies. Particular attention is given to the integration of sensor technology, digital models, and data analytics for improved decision-making.
Teaching and Educational Development
Teaching activities focus on structural engineering, ocean space structures, systems thinking, and engineering design, with particular emphasis on connecting theory, research, and industrial practice.
Since 2015, I have been responsible for the development of the course Design of Ocean Space Structures, based on principles from NORSOK standards and the Eurocodes. In parallel, extensive work has been carried out in problem-based learning (PBL), student group projects, and industry-related project assignments.
Current educational development activities include the establishment of new topics related to coastal environmental loading, including wind, waves, currents, climate change, and their implications for future ocean space structures.
In the longer term, the ambition is to contribute to an integrated educational portfolio covering ocean space structures, coastal and marine engineering, project execution, marine geotechnics, and life-cycle management of infrastructure in collaboration with colleagues across the institute.
