Katarina Lindblad
About
I am Swedish, with a PhD in musicology and a background as a music therapist, singer and social worker. My main field of research is on older people, both from the point of view of dementia, and on old age and gender, with a focus on older men, music and wellbeing. My thesis is called “Like a Patch on the Soul”. Older men and music as a well-being resource.
As a music therapist, I have worked mainly with lecturing and training healthcare professionals in dementia care in music-based caregiving. I have also worked clinically in palliative care with adult patients at the end of life and with music psychotherapy in a private practice that I ran for 10 years. After the public defense, I have also lectured on men/older men and mental (ill)health, which was the theme of the thesis.
Since 2023 I am an associate professor at the department of music at NTNU Trondheim, Norway. There I teach in music and health, but also music psychology, music in everyday life, and some music history. I also supervise bachelor and master theses.
As a researcher I am the head of the research group “Music as a resource and therapy”, https://www.ntnu.edu/music/music-as-a-health-resource-and-therapy and editor of and upcoming anthology on “Music education in development”, due to be published at Cappelen Damm. https://cdforskning.no/cdf/catalog/series/musped.
I am involved in two collaborative research projects at Karolinska Sjukhuset, Stockholm, one on music therapy with children with stroke and their parents, and one on music therapy with adult patients with stroke. Together with a music therapy colleague, I have written a handbook on music and dementia, due to be published at the end of this year, at Ejeby Förlag, Sweden.
Before doing my PhD thesis and coming to Norway, I worked with music journalism, as a freelance presenter at Sveriges Radio P2 and their concert hall Berwaldhallen for 30 years, and with writing texts about artists and the music for, among others, Berwaldhallen, the Royal Swedish Opera and the Swedish opera magazine Opera.
