Laila Marie Kristoffersen
About
I am an Associate Professor in the Master's program in specialized nursing at ISM.
My primary research interests are pain and stress-reducing interventions for premature and sick newborns.
I am part of three research groups:
- Neonatal Medicine-NTNU Neo
- PEARL (Pain in Early Life)
- Pasientnær klinisk forskning
Field of study:
I defended my PhD project in March 2019, titled "Pain and stress in preterm infants - The impact of early skin-to-skin contact after birth on mother and child and the pain-relieving effect of skin-to-skin and different doses of sucrose," with Håkon Bergseng as the main supervisor and Ragnhild Støen as the co-supervisor. The project consisted of three (four) studies where the first examined the effect of skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth between mothers and moderately preterm infants. Studies two and three were randomized controlled trials (RCT) on pain relief during blood sampling and eye examinations. Study number four was a planned RCT on skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth for very preterm infants, with the protocol published. Several of the studies were multicenter studies with both national and international collaboration.
Until December 2023, I was a postdoctoral researcher on the project "A non-separation approach for very preterm infants in the delivery room: Does it matter for child outcomes and maternal mental health?"
In 2024, I started as the project leader for a multicenter study in Norway and Canada, the PROPER study. The study, initiated by St. Olavs Hospital and NTNU, aims to improve pain management and promote physiological stability in premature infants undergoing screening for retinopathy (ROP screening). The study also aims to better equip parents to actively participate in supporting their child during the eye examination. Despite more than 20 years of research on pain management during this examination, no effective method has yet been found.
