Marie Opdal Ulset
About
My PhD project on artificial intelligence focuses on the blurred lines between cheating and learning aids in higher education. The provisional title of the project is "Bytesized: The Automation of Education and Learning". This ethnographic work is based on participant observation and interviews with students at NTNU in Trondheim.
In the "Bytesized" project, I investigate various strategies that students use to pass subjects and complete their education. Examples include "koking" (copying work), strategic "konting" (purposefully failing exams and retaking them later), and the use of artificial intelligence. I explore the role of writing as a "thinking tool" and how artificial intelligence affects students' everyday lives in their studies. Despite the uncertainty associated with the use of language models like ChatGPT and Bing Chat, many students choose to explore these gray areas in academic writing.
