Development of structural systems with enhanced performace based on cross laminated timber (CLT) and semi-rigid connections
The world's population is rapidly increasing, resulting in a greater need for urbanization. However, the traditional construction materials of concrete and steel, which are extensively used in the construction of buildings and other civil-engineered structures, contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce these emissions, it is crucial to use environmentally friendly materials. Timber is a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to concrete and steel. Nevertheless, timber buildings are prone to serviceability issues, such as large lateral displacements and wind-induced vibrations, due to their lightweight nature and moderate stiffness.
Traditional structural systems used in timber buildings often rely on diagonal bracing and CLT walls as lateral load resisting systems. While these structural systems can be efficient, they may also impose architectural restrictions and space limitations. Moment-resisting timber frames (MRTFs) are alternative structural systems that can provide greater architectural flexibility and space. However, MRTFs' performance heavily relies on the performance of their beam-to-column connections.
In this PhD project, innovative timber connections with enhanced stiffness and energy dissipation are being developed to improve the performance of MRTFs. This project involves a broad range of work, including experimental investigations at the fastener and full-scale levels, finite element modeling (FEM), parametric modeling, application of artificial neural networks, and life cycle analysis.
