About

My research interest revolves around studying the causes and effects of the mismanagement of resources in socio-ecological systems. By adopting a systems engineering approach, my research involves applying interdisciplinary research methods from industrial ecology, data science, local ecological knowledge, stakeholder analysis, and multi-criteria decision analysis to address social and environmental challenges through sustainable, circular management practices, technologies, and innovations.

Currently, I am working on studying the system life cycle of plastics emerging from fishing, aquaculture, and other sectors. For sustainable and circular management of plastic polymers within the region, it is essential to know the fate, transport, stocks, and flows of plastic polymer fractions from various industrial sectors and areas. My research involves adapting a system engineering approach and using stakeholder-oriented methods to translate the resource-users knowledge into generating scientific evidence on plastics.

Another aspect of my research focuses on sustainability assessment. In pursuing a circular economy, it is essential to ensure the suggested management strategies are environmentally sustainable, economically feasible, and socially beneficial. So, the research questions that interest me most are: Are circular solutions always sustainable? If not, why? How to realize the principles of circular economy in practice? What systemic changes may facilitate the transition toward a sustainable circular economy?

I have been an Associate Professor at the Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management at the Trondheim campus of NTNU since April 2020. I hold a PhD from NTNU and an MS in Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Infrastructure from KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden.

Shift-Plastics (2021-2024)

Shift Plastics (Shifting to sustainable circular values chains for handling plastics in the fisheries and aquaculture sector)

CalaFeed (2021-2024)

Aim: Enhancing the potential of Calanus as raw material for sustainable aquaculture feed ingredients. NTNU will develop a method for holistic sustainability assessment of fish feed alternatives used by the Norwegian aquaculture sector.

Circular Ocean (2015-2018)

In pursuit of innovative and sustainable solutions for marine plastic waste, the Circular Ocean project seeks to inspire enterprises to realize the hidden opportunities of discarded fishing nets and ropes in the Northern Periphery & Arctic region.

Combining skills to identify the «Sweet Spot» to solve marine plastic pollution in Norway (2022-2025)

The project aims to find preventive, curative, and innovative strategies for plastic waste within the overarching framework of the Circular Economy and the UN’s decade of ocean science for transformation towards plastic-free Norwegian waters.

Sirkulær- og miljøeffekter for oppdrettsnøter (2023-2024)

Funded by the Norwegian Retailers Fund (Handelens Miljøfond), this multi-stakeholder project aims to generate knowledge on sustainable and circular ways to manage Cu-impregnated nets and ropes from the aquaculture sector of Norway.

Quantification of end-of-life fishing gear stocks to prevent marine litter (2020-2022)

Funded by the UN-SDG-ASIA program, this project aims at quantifying the extent of plastic waste from Taiwanese fisheries and further developing knowledge-based management strategies to prevent marine litter in the region.
