About

The main focus of my lab is the study of phenotypic plasticity, which is how organisms change their phenotype (e.g. morphology, physiology) throughout life to prevent negative effects of environmental change. This work consists of both broad meta-analysis and targeted laboratory studies, with the latter typically using water fleas (Daphnia, small planktonic crustaceans) as model organisms.

In addition to the focused work on phenotypic plasticity, my lab also has activities in areas such as physiology, restoration ecology, population ecology, community ecology, and environmental toxicology, and including organisms like salmonid fishes and sea lice.

For more information about the research in my lab see the Research tab.

Phenotypic plasticity

All organisms live in continuously changing environments. This includes changes in both abiotic (e.g. temperature, light, oxygen) and biotic (e.g., food availability, competition, predation) variables, which may fluctuate naturally or due to human impacts. A fundamental aim in ecology and evolution is therefore to understand how organisms respond to contemporary environmental variability, and to predict how organisms will cope with future changes in patterns of environmental variability.

To do this we need to explore the mechanisms that organisms use to prevent such changes to result in a decrease in their fitness (survival and reproduction). Over long time scales (multi-generational), adaptive evolution provides a method by which populations’ mean phenotypes may track gradual long-term changes in the environment. However, to deal with shorter-term within-generation environmental fluctuations this is not an efficient mechanism. Instead, more immediate changes in phenotypes, typically occurring over hours to days, will be required. Such changes are termed phenotypic plasticity, and this is currently the focus of my lab.

We are particularly interested in various aspects about how phenotypic plasticity evolves. When environments change, the ability of organisms to approach an optimal phenotype by phenotypic plasticity will depend on how much (capacity) and how rapidly (rate) phenotypes can change. Yet, our understanding of when individuals can or cannot track shifting phenotypic optima is undermined by substantial knowledge gaps regarding populations’ potential to evolve, particularly with respect to the rate dimension.

Model organism - Water fleas

In my lab we use Daphnia (D. magna) as a model organism. Daphnia are small crustaceans which commonly dominate the grazing communities in lakes and ponds, and they have several biological characteristics that make them favourable for such studies, such as clonal reproduction, short generation time, and a long history as model organisms in freshwater labs throughout the world.

Methods

Up until recently we have focused on developing analytical methods for quantifying the two components of phenotypic plasticity (rate and capacity) from experimental data, and applying these to existing data through meta-analyses (e.g. Burton et al. 2022, Einum and Burton 2022, Burton and Einum 2025, Einum and Burton 2025). Currently we are shifting towards applying these methods to own produced data from the lab where we address targeted questions about the evolution of phenotypic plasticity. Of particular focus with respect to this is studies on temperature effects, for which we have a well equipped lab with multiple climate cabinets and an automated video-assisted setup for quantifying thermal tolerance (Burton et al. 2018). Such studies are also typically linked with physiological measurements such as respiration and hemoglobin production.

Our lab organism

In our experimental work we use water fleas (Daphnia) which has many characteristics that make them highly suitable to study phenotypic plasticity

Phenotypic plasticity in Daphnia

Daphnia are famous for their phenotypic plasticity, with development of helmets (and/or spines) protecting against predators.
