About

About the course

Course content

Department of Biology offers their students in the study programs MSOCEAN, MSAQUAH, MSBIO and MSNARM an internship course in relevant socio-cultural/economical and professional environments in non-academic partners, associations or in research institutes. This internship aims at acquainting the student with the real working environment through practical training, teamwork, and individual learning.

An agreement need to be drafted and signed by the students, the host company and supervisor at NTNU explaining rights and duties of each party. The agreement can also describe the content of the project and the criteria for scoring the internship. Students, supervisor and external party plan the project, especially details regarding practical support and how the project will be conducted at the external company/organization.

For students following the Erasmus Mundus MSAQUAH and the MSOCEAN the students will receive a list of potential internship hosts within the aquaculture sector. Students are encouraged to contact specific companies of interest. For the MSAQUAH this internship is mandatory. [BG1] Possible external parties will be offered to students before start of the course.

For students following the MSBIO or MSNARM programmes we collaborate with regional and local management sectors. Here students will sign up doing projects in groups at one of the host institutions

Learning outcome

For MSAQUAH:

Knowledge:

  1. How to approach and discuss project cooperation with external partners in aquaculture
  2. How health actors in the aquaculture industry might use research to obtain knowledge
  3. Methods used in research in aquaculture health
  4. Analysing, synthesizing and presenting project results to partners and advisers

Skills:

  1. Propose scientific projects to help solving health problems in aquaculture.
  2. Communicate with health actors and in clear words describe disorders to support expert diagnosis
  3. Select methods for use in research and assessment of health state
  4. Together with advisers, plan a small research project related to specific aquaculture health issue.

General competence:

  1. Better see the industry perspectives and challenge of aquaculture health managements
  2. See earlier gained theoretical knowledge and skills in broader scientific and societal perspectives
  3. Inspire and occasionally lead a multidisciplinary team in scientific project on aquaculture health.
  4. Communicate practical challenges of aquaculture management issues beyond the health sector in a societal and public perspective

Learning methods and activities

Students must conduct a planned scientific research project with a company/external organization. This course involves work within the external partner premises and in offices or laboratories of NTNU during final data analysis and writing.

The approximate working load of the course is 200 hours.

Written report is mandatory.

This internship aims at acquainting the student with the real working environment through practical training, teamwork, and individual learning. The forms of learning will vary depending on company/external organization and project.
