I am a PhD candidate in Trygve Brautaset's research group at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Science. In this group we are working on developing cell factories that, through genetic engineering, is capable of utilizing a range of compounds as energy sources to produce valuable components like amino acids, proteins, chemicals, etc.
In my current project we want to use by-products and waste from the agricultural industry as carbon source for the bacterium Corynebaterium glutamicum and the fungi species Paecilomyces variotii and Wickerhamomyces anomalus, to produce valuable compounds. This will increase the value of the waste- and by-products, incentivizing the industry to use these further, as opposed to simply ending up as waste.
