About

Background

After finishing my master’s degree in marine biology at NTNU I was working as a department engineer in the marine section at the Department of Biology, NTNU from 2009 - 2016. Subsequent I started on my PhD with the working title: Cultivation potential of brown and red macroalgae species integrated with open Salmon fish Aquaculture. This PhD project aims to obtain new knowledge in cultivation technology for brown and red macroalgae species for use in Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) to mitigate environmental problems related to sea-based aquaculture while obtaining added value of the feed investments of fish production.

Since august 2020 I am a permanent member of the engineer crew at the Department of Biology working mainly at Trondhjem Biologiske stasjon.

Working scope

My main task is to manage various lab facilities housing three main instruments and many smaller ones. It includes advisement and support for planning and carrying out experiments, education and training for sampling, order or custom make equipment for experiments and sampling. Most of the time I work closely with students/Ph.D.’s when receiving and preparing samples, analyzing them and gather, visualize, sending and explaining the results. Moreover, I take care of the microalgae bank. Since 2009 I had various assignments like quantify and identify micro and mesoplankton microscopically, participate in research and education cruises for determination of species and surveillance, retrieve otoliths and more.

Instruments/Analysis (main)

  • Element analyzer Vario El Cube from Elementar for CN analysis. (micro-, macroalgae, lumpfish larvae, nudibranchs, polychaetas, barnacles, soil, grinded fish- and chicken bones and more)
  • HPLC pigment analyzer og analysis (most relevant for micro- og macroalgae)
  • Nutrient analyzer for various compounds of N, P, A, Si, (in sea-, ras- and freshwater and particulate P in micro,-macroalgae and polychaetas)

Competencies

  • CN analysis with Vario EL Cube
  • Nutrient analysis, OI Analytical
  • Pigment analysis HPLC
