About

Responsibilities

Slađana Lazarević, PhD in Architecture and Urbanism, is an Associate Professor in Re-valuing urban planning and design in the face of climate change. She is an NTNU Onsager Fellow and Fellow of the Outstanding Academic Fellowship Program 2024-2028. Under her research portfolio, the first-of-a-kind research on how value-based urban planning and design can be optimally deployed to achieve climate neutrality and significantly reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions will be performed.

With her research and innovation management skills and knowledge of sustainable architecture, centred around the concept of circularity and adaptability in climate-responsive integrated design and urban planning, she contributed to the implementation of a few large-scale demonstration and innovation projects, coordinated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and funded by the European Union’s Horizon research and innovation programme.

The ARV - Climate Positive Circular Communities, is an H2020 EU-funded project implemented by the Norwegian University for Science and Technology (NTNU) in cooperation with 35 partners from 8 countries, influencing six demonstration large-scale pilot projects (Norway, Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Czech Republic and Italy) and thus creating climate-positive circular communities and increasing the building renovation rate in 4 different climate zones across Europe.

The syn.ikia - SustainablePlusEnergy Neighbourhoods innovation project within the EU Horizon 2020 framework involves 13 partners from six countries. It aims to enable the development of sustainable plus-energy neighbourhoods across different climates, contexts and markets in Europe. Throughout the project, four real-life plus-energy demo neighbourhood projects (in Norway, Denmark, Austria and Spain) tailored to four different climatic zones will be developed, analysed, optimised and monitored, demonstrating the functionality of the plus-energy neighbourhood concept for the rest of Europe.

She is currently involved with various roles, such as a researcher, co-coordinator, WP lead and Task leader in several ongoing Horizon Europe funded projects, including: Re-Value Cities I Re-Valuing Urban Quality & Climate Neutrality in European Waterfront Cities, Bauhaus Bites - Positive Food Environments Fortified with Nature-Based Solutions and New European Bauhaus, ClimaGen - Climate-resilient reGeneration and renaturing.

In 2025, she was involved in developing a new Master Programme at the Department of Architecture and Planning (IAP) - Urban Planning. Climate change, nature and the environment are key topics along with social and societal perspectives. Interdisciplinary projects where several disciplines are included are crucial for achieving sustainable development in urban contexts. Problem-based group work and collaboration on complex urban areas are therefore central to the programme.

As part of the programme curriculum, Assoc. Prof. Slađana Lazarević has created a new master's course, 'Climate Responsive Urban Regeneration', which is an urban studio created as a project-based studio with an advanced spatial focus on climate-responsive urban regeneration and planning.

Re-Value I Re-Valuing Urban Quality & Climate Neutrality in European Waterfront Cities

The project's efforts are focused on nine waterfront cities by all partners collectively seeking to understand, plan, develop, and share a comprehensive perspective and approach to tackling the interconnected systemic challenges faced by cities today.

CrAFt I Creating Actionable Futures

The project Creating Actionable Futures – CrAFt is part of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative of the European Union. The project is placing the transition to climate neutrality at the heart of urban stakeholders.

Bauhaus Bites: Positive Food Environments Fortified with Nature-Based Solutions and New European Bauhaus

The Bauhaus Bites project aims to contribute to resilient, inclusive, healthy, and green rural, coastal, and urban communities, delivering BB Food Environments, amplified by the NEB and fortified with NBS.

ClimaGen I Climate-resilient reGeneration and renaturing

ClimaGen focuses on urban greening and renaturing to promote climate-resilient regeneration in European cities, particularly in vulnerable neighbourhoods.

Urban Planning - Master’s Programme (MBYPLAN)

Climate change, nature and the environment are key topics along with social and societal perspectives. Interdisciplinary projects where several disciplines are included are crucial for achieving sustainable development in urban contexts. Problem-based group work and collaboration on complex urban areas are therefore central to the programme.

As part of the programme curriculum, Assoc. Prof. Slađana Lazarević has created a new master's course, 'Climate Responsive Urban Regeneration', which is an urban studio created as a project-based studio with an advanced spatial focus on climate-responsive urban regeneration and planning.

PhD Course - Critical Urban Theory

Critical Urban Theory is an approach that views cities not just as physical spaces, but as contested arenas shaped by power, inequality, and ideology, challenging mainstream views of urbanisation as natural or inevitable. This course elaborates on critical urban politics and planning theories, particularly emphasising urban transformations toward climate neutrality, for climate and heritage just transition.

2022-2023: Department of Architecture and Technology

The MSc in Sustainable Architecture at NTNU aims to educate and train building professionals in the use and development of competitive methods and solutions for lowering GHG emissions of the built environment in a life-cycle perspective.

The curriculum of the MSc in Sustainable Architecture is structured around three main concerns related to the environmental impact of the built environment:

  • environmental performance
  • environmental impact
  • Integrated energy design.
