Hi! My name is Tarjei Brekke and I am a PhD fellow at the ERC project "A Middle Way: Probing Sufficiency Through Meat and Milk in China" (MidWay). My project working title is "For the Sake of Freshness: Tracking Salmon Infrastructures from Scandinavia to China" and concerns itself with the infrastructure brought along with the salmon's movement across the globe, viewed from an STS angle with China as a case.
I have a bachelor and master in China studies from the University of Oslo. My master's thesis titled "Beijing at the Helm? Chinese Distant Water Fishing Under Global Governance" looked into China's distant water fishing fleets and the multitude of actors involved in their management. I focused especially on China's balancing of "fair use" of resources and conservation efforts in the Antarctic Ocean and analysed the involvement of State, local state, private companies, IOs and NGOs in controlling this balance.
My research interests largely concern topic beneath the wide umbrella known as the "blue humanities" - the melting pot of subjects concerning human-ocean relations, interactions and mutual influences from a humanities perspective. I am particularly interested in fishing and aquaculture, both from STS and anthropological perspectives, and given both Norway and China's gargantuan roles in global fisheries management and aquaculture, I hope to employ my background to explore this niche with gusto.
