Background and activities

Thor I. Fossen is a professor of guidance, navigation and control at the NTNU Department of Engineering Cybernetics. His educational background covers marine technology, aeronautics and astronautics, computer science, automatic control and cybernetics.

Fossen's current research fields are:

  • Guidance, Navigation and Control (GNC): Autonomous and intelligent systems, field robots, vehicle dynamics including multi-body systems, marine craft hydrodynamics, vehicle simulators, unmanned vehicles (UAV, AUV, USV), autopilots, trajectory tracking, path-following control.
  • Inertial Navigation Systems (INS): GNSS- and compass-denied navigation, aiding techniques, attitude estimation, automated situational awareness, sensor fusion and state estimation, nonlinear observer theory, Kalman filtering.
  • Cyber Security: Real-time encryption of feedback control and sensory signals, cryptology, stream chippers, AES, synchronization, authentication methods.

Fossen has published approximately 400 conference and journal papers, 3 Wiley textbooks and 3 Springer editorials; see the Amazon author page.

He is one of the founders of the company Marine Cybernetics AS (2002), which was acquired by DNV. Fossen is one of the founders of the company ScoutDI (2017).

  • IFAC MCMC'15 Best Regular Paper Award for a paper entitled "A Virtual Vertical Reference Concept for GNSS/INS Applications at the Sea Surface" together with  T. H. Bryne and T. A. Johansen.
