About

Trude J. Arntsen is a researcher, educator and innovation leader at the Department of Design, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). She serves as Programme Director for the five-year Master’s programme in Industrial Design and as Innovation Lead at the Faculty of Architecture and Design.

Her work explores the evolving role of professional design competence in times of societal transition, technological change and increasing complexity. She is particularly interested in how designers develop the judgement, imagination, aesthetic sensibility and creative capacity needed to shape meaningful futures across public, social and technological contexts.

Drawing on Nordic design traditions, Trude approaches design as a creative, reflective and transformative practice. Her research examines how visualisation, prototyping, materialisation and co-creative processes can support exploration, sense-making and transformation within complex socio-technical systems. A central concern in her work is how design can help individuals, organisations and communities navigate transitions and create new possibilities for action.

An important focus of her research is the future of the design profession and design education. She investigates how design capabilities can be developed both within and beyond the design disciplines, while also exploring what remains distinctive about professional designers in a world where design practices, interdisciplinary collaboration and artificial intelligence are becoming increasingly widespread.

Through collaborations with public sector organisations, industry and civil society, she studies how design contributes to innovation, organisational change and societal transformation. Her work spans design education, service design, public sector innovation, professional learning and the development of future-oriented design capabilities.

Research

Research Interests

How professional design competence is developed and applied in the context of societal change, public sector innovation and emerging technologies.

My research focuses on design education and the evolving role of the design profession, with particular attention to how creative and aesthetic design practices contribute to understanding, development and transformation in complex societal contexts. Key areas of interest include co-creation, professional learning, organisational capacity building, public sector innovation and socio-technical systems. I am especially interested in how visualisation, prototyping and imagination can be used to explore possibilities, create shared understanding and shape processes of change.
