Doctoral dissertation

The Graphic Centre has a system for completing your doctoral thesis with an NTNU cover and title page. In the system you can also order printing and shipping.

A file identical to the print file will be transferred to the library after approving the test print. When everything is ready, we (the Graphic Center) send the file to the University Library, who publish it in NTNU Open.

NB! For the file to be openly available, the candidate must submit an author agreement to the library before publication. Information about author agreements can be requested from your department or from the library.

Some departments/faculties require that also the printed editions must be delivered 3 weeks before. This varies, so please check with your faculty/department, as it is impossible for us to know what applies to you.

Theses approved for public defence must have an ISBN and serial number. We cannot do this for you, and you can obtain the numbers from https://innsida.ntnu.no/isbnice/

All the theses are printed in B5 format, but if you prefer to write in A4 format you can do that safely, and then the Graphic Center will reduce it to B5 before printing.

  • If you are writing your thesis in an A4 format, you can use the default settings in word which are 2.5 cm margin and 3.5 cm binding margin. You can then use e.g. Times 12 pt. with line spacing 1.5.
  • If you are writing your thesis in a B5 format, you can use the default settings in word, which is 2 cm margin, binding margin 3 cm. You can then use e.g. Times 11 pt. with line spacing 1.5.

In our system, covers and title sheets are generated automatically in accordance with NTNU's profile, so you should not include these in your original file.

All parts of the thesis must be into a PDF file to be uploaded into our system.

It is not possible to include a picture on the cover page, but instead you can put one on the title sheet, if you like. For the best possible result the image should preferably have a resolution of at least 300 ppi.

The printing costs depend on the number of printed examples, the number of pages, how many pages to be printed in colour, and whether there are any corrections before the thesis can be produced. You can calculate the price in our ordering system.

Please note that we have a separate ordering option for theses that have not yet been approved for public defence – Doctoral to committee.

It varies a bit how many printed copies the departments/faculties pay for. We have no record of this, so you must ask the department administration about what applies to you. In our system, you can enter how many you will pay for yourself and how many the department will pay for, and the exact price for each party will be calculated for you.

A proofing print of the thesis will be sent to the entered delivery address, or you can pick it up yourself at the Graphic center at Dragvoll. The proofing is for color correction and review only. Therefore, carefully review the document before submitting it for print.

It takes 2-3 days to produce the proof, and once it is approved, we usually need a week producing the entire thesis. Please note that proofs sent by post entail extra delivery time, and you must yourself take the post delivery time into account.

Unfortunately you cannot pre-book an appointment for printing. You can submit your order only when your thesis is finished.

It is important for us to assist you as well as we can, and doctoral theses are prioritized over other orders that are not as urgent.

If you need more copies of your doctoral dissertation, you can order reprints. The information from your previous order is stored in the order system for 5 years, and before that it is not necessary to generate a new cover or title page over again.
