The research group is an interdisciplinary research network composed of researchers and educators from various programs, departments, and faculties. It is rooted in the collaboration between the Archaeology and Geography programs. Our collaboration is best viewed against the broader context of contributing to learning environments within the HUMSAM (Humanities and Social Sciences) cluster at NTNU, where one of the important common development goals is to experiment with new forms of student-active learning. The research group explores the pedagogical frameworks for how technology and technological tools can contribute to learning in higher education.

We examine how different tools such as low-cost VR, 360° technology, drones, photogrammetry and AI, can be used as pedagogical aids and learning tools that enhance students’ engagement and learning, while at the same time also stimulating interdisciplinary collaboration.

In earlier projects, we have investigated what is required for larger interdisciplinary initiatives, with a focus on the exploration of technological learning tools and their implementation into on-campus learning practices. This has proven to be a complex field, involving various issues and challenges that have been partly addressed through our completed projects such as VR Learn and TeTL-TI. These are questions we continue to work on, while also exploring how we can further develop new research and teaching projects based on experience sharing and collaboration within the network.

Completed projects:

2020-2025: VR Learn (Project financed by Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HKdir))
Norwegian publication: Virtuell virkelighet i undervisning: Lavkostnadsløsninger for læring i høyere utdanning
Project podcast (Norwegian): Episode 2. Bruk av virtuell virkelighet i arkeologiutdanning

2022: EMERGE “NTNU Centre for Student-Active Learning and Emerging Technologies”

2023: TeTL-TI: Teknologi for tverrfaglig læring – fra test til implementering (Fremtidens Campus) (Technology for Interdisciplinary Learning – From Testing to Implementation (The NTNU project “Future Campus”)
Project panel Video (Norwegian): Summary and Results

Ongoing Projects:

2024–2028: Utforsk, DICH – Digitalization for Cultural Heritage (Project financed by Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills (HKdir))

2025–2026: GlobusNord (Nordplus) Climate and Land Use Change: From Observation, Exploration, and Documentation to Knowledge and Knowledge Sharing
