Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab

About the project

The vision of the NTNU Intelligent Transportation Systems Lab is to be a national leading and internationally recognized research lab within its academic field.

Goals

The goal of this lab is to research and develop technologies to support safe, efficient and secure transportation systems, aiming at increasing traffic efficiency, passenger safety and comfort and reducing cost and environmental impacts. Activities in this lab include research and development, technology implementation and prototype, experimental testbeds and facilities with the goal to demonstrate the effects and readiness of the intelligent transportation technologies. When ready, it is also our goal to be able to transfer and deploy the innovative technologies for the large-scale and practical use.

Motivation

Transportation systems, including cars, trucks, public buses, airplanes, subways, railroad, have been a crucial part of the modern society that enable economic growth and welfare for citizens. Rapid increase in globalization as well as urbanization leads to a real demand for better and more efficient transportation systems. Without these improvements, societal and environmental impacts are inevitable. Among a number of indications, traffic congestion in major cities around the world is one of the most compelling evidence, which shows how the looming transportation issues can significantly affect our daily lives, our society's productivity, and our environment.

In recent years, emerging technologies such as the ultra-high speed wireless networks, the Internet of Things, and the advances in 4D simulation and virtual reality have been introduced to the transportation system domain, aiming to offer new and innovative ways of handling the future societal demands for safe, efficient, and secure transportation systems. To be able to integrate these new digital technologies with the existing transportation infrastructure or systems, one needs to consider several aspects before actual deployment of these technologies. System modelling and simulations, secure software development and implementation, experimentation and impact study on business, environments, and other parties such as pedestrians and cyclists, and interface design and user acceptance study are critical and the main focus on this lab.

This lab contributes to the research, development, and implementation of the new and innovative communication and information technology for the safe, secure, and efficient transportation systems. Various critical aspects of the technologies will be studied and comprehensively analysed to verify the readiness of the technologies for actual deployment and their effects on the users, societies, and environments.
