Environmentally friendly use of marine battery: a study of fuel savings and battery aging by use of different operational strategies for batteries

Background: Marine batteries can be used in many different modes, such as power smoothing, peak shaving, load shifting and zero emission operation. It is expected that some of the methods will save much fuel while others may increase the fuel consumption. This study should quantify the fuel savings of the different modes.

Objective: The lifetime of lithium batteries is limited. Deep cycles accelerate the aging, while shallow cycles do not affect the battery much. This study will model the aging of batteries and simulate the different operational modes. This will be used to quantify the aging of the batteries due to different modes.
