Intelligent Battery Management System for autonomous all-electric urban passenger ferries
Intelligent Battery Management System for autonomous all-electric urban passenger ferries
Background: The task is connected to the NTNU Autoferry project, as a pilot project to drive autonomous ferries for urban water transport. The full-scale autonomous ferry to be powered fully electrically with onboard battery packs. On the other hand, batteries have operational challenges, which directly impacts their lifetime and reliability. Therefore, Battery Management System (BMS) is required to achieve the safe, autonomous and optimal performance.
Objective: This project begins with a review of state of the art objectives and strategies for the battery management system and the power system and propeller of the full scale ferry. For this, it is necessary to study the requirements for full-scale prototype, including propulsion power, required energy for each crossing, assumed schedule based on the movement of passengers, time required for charging etc. The main tasks will be then:
- Investigate the design requirements for power and propulsion system.
- Investigate automatic charging strategies assuming short stop times.
- Design BMS for autonomous ferry with given requirements and data.
