Strategy 2026-2035
Strategy 2026–2035

Vision
The Department of Marine Technology shall contribute to environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable ocean industries in Norway and globally.
Societal Mission
Our most important contribution is the candidates we educate, both at master’s and doctoral level. Candidates who can and will contribute! We shall also contribute through research results - both results that advance the research frontier, and results that can have direct utility for industry. The latter type of results shall, to the greatest possible extent, be refined into innovations.
Recruitment is central to achieving our goals.
We shall recruit and retain:
- enough of the best students to fill our study programmes
- the best research talents into our doctoral programme
- the best researchers and lecturers as permanent academic staff
- a professional and forward-looking technical and administrative support system
We shall then develop these people into:
- highly qualified and motivated master’s graduates
- independently thinking, hardworking, and skilled researchers with a PhD
- world-leading researchers and lecturers
Excellent nationally and internationally
Through a strong research culture, outstanding experimental facilities, and world-leading expertise in linking experimental and theoretical methods for marine applications, the Department of Marine Technology maintains its high international ranking.
How we achieve this ambition:
- We attract the best employees and students in marine technology
- We collaborate with the best universities internationally
- We maintain high scientific quality and relevance in our research and publish in the best journals
- BOA projects* finance important research and contribute to the department’s operating income
- Researchers and students actively use Archimedes’ House and Fjordlab; we bridge the gap from idea to verification and testing with opportunities for low-threshold prototyping
- Competent administration and technical support systems with sufficient capacity
- Close collaboration with SINTEF Ocean, other relevant research actors, and Norwegian and international industry ensures funding and relevance
* Externally funded contribution- and commissioned activity
