About New European Bauhaus

What?

The New European Bauhaus is a cultural and environmental initiative from the European Commission. It links the European Green Deal to daily life through our built environment.

Inspired by how the original Bauhaus movement united art, craftmanship and industry, the New European Bauhaus seeks to unite architects, designers, planners, artists, scientists, engineers, policymakers and citizens.

How?

  • A community, initiated by the EU, operating through grassroot engagement and experiments on ground, connecting nearly 2000 organisations.
  • A policy framework, encouraging best practice and informing policymakers both on EU level and in municipalities across the continent, linking a network of national authorities with the local level.
  • A funding mechanism, with funding both for local projects and research and innovation actions, with a growing number of proposals.

Why?

The New European Bauhaus aligns with NTNU strategy as a driving force for knowledge-based and sustainable social development, grounded in creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship. Through NEB, NTNU can take advantage of our distinctive character and interdisciplinarity to develop knowledge that addresses complex societal challenges.

The NEB Compass

The New European Bauhaus is oriented around three values:

  • Sustainable
  • Beautiful
  • Inclusive

and three principles:

  • Transdisciplinary approach
  • Multi-level engagement
  • Participatory process

Research and innovation

Since NEB’s launch in 2020 there have been around 700 projects, and NTNU have been involved in several. The projects initiated by the New European Bauhaus aim to transform neighbourhoods through design, culture, and innovation.

The initiative has focused on real places and real people from the very beginning and aims to demonstrate through pilot research innovation action projects that sustainable choices can improve quality of life, strengthen communities, and spark creativity.

NTNU leads the project NEB Junction, a new platform to showcase the knowledge base of NEB projects across Europe. Explore the map here.
