Ocean Week 2023 — Ålesund

PROGRAMME

PROGRAMME - THURSDAY MAY 4TH ÅLESUND - 1

09:00-09:55: How to deal with climate change

Climate change is a complex and contentious issue. The outlook for the year 2070 is bleak. We can expect 50-70 cm higher water levels, extreme storm surges and 100 years of hurricanes annually. What does this future look like? How can we deal with it?

10:15-11:35: How can we accelerate the green transition?

The green shift will be challenging. We must reduce consumption, use renewable energy sources and carriers. Will the Generation IV nuclear power revolutionize energy supply and help realize the green transition?

PROGRAMME - THURSDAY MAY 4TH ÅLESUND - 3

12:15-13:25: How do we deal with increased autonomy? Ships gain increased autonomy and are connected to the rest of the world.

Distributed maritime capabilities where knowledge and competence are increasingly distributed to technology, procedures and regulations will change the role of the individual seafarers. Vessel positions, manoeuvres, speed, fuel consumption, cargo condition and so on can for example be monitored in control centres. Fleet managers will then be able to analyse this data, enabling them to advise the captain and crew on navigation, weather patterns, fuel consumption and port arrival. We will have distributed maritime capabilities as well as dispersed ship crew with other roles and responsibilities than we can see in present operations.

It sums up with a short status on program activities as part of the Ocean Decade 2021-2030 in Norway and at NTNU.

Program:

13.30-13.40: Introduction to Circular Chains in Ocean Plastics relevant research, with Annik Magerholm Fet

I have been employed at NTNU Ålesund since 2019 as an associate professor. I am the local study program coordinator for the Bachelor's degree in Renewable Energy, with the study specializations Maritime Energy and Energy Storage.

I teach classes in renewable energy and supervises students on bachelor's, master's and PhD theses. My main areas of interest are low-carbon and renewable energy carriers for maritime fuel systems.

I came to NTNU from Rolls-Royce Marine (Now Kongsberg Maritime) where I worked with the design of LNG fuel systems for ships, and innovation and patenting. Previously, I worked at Naturgass Møre with LNG distribution and use on land, Statoil (now Equinor) with gas transport and at RF-Rogaland Research (now Norce) with research on multiphase technology.
