AAR1025 - Drawing as a Tool for Creative and Visual Thinking

Course content

Through lecture and tutorials the course covers aspects of understanding visual language and the creative process with focus on drawing as a tool. The course covers simple perspective construction, freehand drawing from observation, drawing from images, as well as drawing from imagination. A range of techniques are demonstrated in the tutorials for the students to use and develop in the assigned task. The lectures cover a wide range of topics within the pictorial fields and are designed to supplement the students with perspective that the tutorials do not cover.

Learning outcome

The objective of this course is to provide basic drawing tools for communication as well as developing ideas. Through working with assignments and group discussion the course intends to motivate one's inate instinct to draw and break down the barriers that inhibit one from doing so. The assignments and lectures also aim to sharpen observational skills and give an understanding of the methods of depiction as well as give insight into the range of processes different creatives have to achieve their work.

Learning methods and activities

The class is based on working in the classroom, through tutorials with teacher assistance. The course is based on practical work throughout the whole semester. Documentation in form of scethchbook is intergrated as a documentation of the students creative process throughout the semester.There will also be occasional group critiques and discussion of the work at certain points of the semester.Students will work with a range of drawing tools that vary according to the given assignment. Exercises with individual tutoring constitute an important part of the education (learning by doing). All lessons and lectures will be given in English.Max. 70 students. 80% attendance to the class is required

Course materials

Students will be given a list of drawing materials to use for the course at the beginning of the semester. Students will be asked to buy a sketchbook at the beginning of the semester. All information regarding this will be communicated through lecture as well as through It's Learning.
