About

About the course

Course content

Through collaboration with students of architecture in architectural design in design studios, the course gives students of engineering an introduction to collaboration between architects and engineers in explicit architectural design.

Learning outcome

GENERAL COMPETENCE: The course will give students of engineering insight into basic issues of architectural design as well as how their own field of engineering can be included in this. KNOWLEDGE: After completing the course, the students will have practice-based knowledge about basic aspects of architectural design and about relationships between architecture and their own field of engineering regarding both concepts/overall-ideas and collaborations in explicit architectural design. SKILLS: Based on their own scholarly background, students of engineering should be able to participate actively in building-design / architectural-design together with architects. The course should also provide an improved background for working with design-concepts and explicit design within their own field of engineering.

Learning methods and activities

PART A, 1st and 2nd semester: Two meetings and a one-day-seminar with lectures and presentations every semester. Evaluation of Part A: Pass / Fail Requirements for obligatory activities: Participation in at least one meeting every semester. Active participation in terms of presentation in at least one of the one-day seminars. PART B, 3rd semester: This is the main part of the course. The teaching is integrated with design studio class(es) at NTNU's architecture program where the task typically is one architectural design project that runs throughout the entire semester. As usual, in architectural design studios, the teaching consists of seminars, lectures, and supervision in studios which pays particular attention to presentations/reviews both during and at the end of the semester. The engineering students will have their own work station in the design studio together with the architecture students. This course is 7,5 credits as opposed to the typical architecture project course which is 15 credits. Therefore, the working load as well as the deliverables will be somewhat different. The student of engineering will spend a little less time in the studio, particularly at the end of semester.

Compulsory assignments

  • Seminar and joint meetings 1. semester
  • Seminar and joint meetings 2. semester
  • Active participation in design works in studio, project reviews included

Further on evaluation

Active participation in building-design at the studios in collaboration with the students of architecture is required in order to pass the course. This includes contributions in at least 2 all-day reviews during the semester. Deliverables / materials to be evaluated will be an illustrated written report. This will normally include a first section in which the student presents key architectural projects and discusses design options from the semester project assignment. The second part should explain architectural concept development throughout the semester and, from the standpoint of an engineering student, present and discuss themes and solutions of the final project in more detail. Obligatory work must be delivered and approved before the exam. Deferred exams and failed exams are normally taken during the next ordinary examination period. Approved obligatory work may be included in the grade basis upon postponed examination or repetition, for up to 1.5 years.

Specific conditions

Limited admission to classes. For more information: https://i.ntnu.no/wiki/-/wiki/English/Admission+to+courses+with+restricted+admission

Admission to a programme of study is required:
