Course content

Historical aspect: 10%.
(Registration, measuring and presentation of existing buildings and-/or landscapes. Brief history of the 20.th century architecture).
Architectural design: 75%.
Form and colour studies:15%.
(Exercises in two- and three dimensional form).

Learning outcome

Knowledge:
The course provides a basic introduction to the theoretical, practical and esthetical basis of architecture. Emphasize on USE, PLACE, SPACE and TECTONICS.
Skills/ Practice in:
- Teamwork: Develop the ability both to cooperate with other students and to make individual statements as a fundament in the creative process.
- Developing and realizing architectural ideas in text, drawings and model.
- The use of relevant tools provided in the different stages of project development. Emphases on analog drawings and scale models as tools for development.
- The basic architectural drawing conventions.
- To sense and communicate qualities and information connected to a place.(Measuring, scetching, drawings, photo etc.)


General knowledge:
The students will be exposed to relevant references concerning basic architectural topics both in the tutorial situation as well as in lectures. To achieve a basic understanding of construction and material the students are introduced to full scale building in the beginning of the semester.
Understanding of multi-perspective thinking (complexity aspect) and the deeper cultural role of architecture (depth aspect) is central.

Learning methods and activities

Practical part / exercises:
First assignment; “Structure in landscape”
Architectural design scale 1:10 and 1:1. Group work. Mandatory participation

Second assignment; ”Architecture and Society”
Registration, measuring and presentation of existing buildings in cultural and geographical context. Group work. Mandatory participation.

Third assignment; “Space for invitation”
Architectural design. Individual assignment. Mandatory.

Workshops; Visual communication. Architectural drawings. Lay out. Sketching.

Group work is emphasized so that different perspectives and experiences becomes a part of the basis of knowledge.

Theoretical part: Lectures, seminars, literature, excursions.

Further on evaluation

Postponed examinations are usually scheduled for the next regular exam period.
