About the course

Course content

The course examines methodological approaches to understanding existing building stock at a system level. Students will become familiar with different perspectives from technological, practical, cultural and theoretical standpoints. Particular emphasis will be placed on investigations that illuminate the significance of buildings as material banks in a future circular economy, as well as the practical approaches associated with this. The course seeks collaboration with the ongoing research projects related to existing buildings. Students will receive an introduction to basic scientific method in architectural research.

When choosing the specialization area Topology and Tectonics within AAR4690 Circular Studio - Materials, AAR4904 Tectonics and Reuse is a mandatory knowledge topic.

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The candidates should be familiar with different perspectives on existing buildings and discuss their significance for further use of the building. The candidates should be familiar with relevant research within a limited topic within the analysis of existing buildings.

Skills: The candidates should be able to apply methods for systematic registration of buildings so that further use can be assessed at a higher level.
