About

About the course

Course content

The course provides both theoretical and practical insight into planning for cycling as a mode of transport. One of its starting points is overarching societal planning and how strategic measures can promote active transport, with examples from Norway and other European countries.

Students will gain research-based knowledge about cyclists’ needs and preferences, and how these can be integrated into both strategic and physical planning. The course takes an in-depth look at various types of cycling infrastructure, assessing their strengths and weaknesses. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of coherent cycling networks and the importance of design details.

In addition, the course highlights other factors that can contribute to increased bicycle use, including bicycle parking, bike-sharing solutions, infrastructure operation and maintenance, and traffic safety for cyclists.

Learning outcome

General Competence: The candidate can:

  • Reflect on the prioritizing of cycling within their own municipality.
  • Propose and prioritize measures and strategic choices based on an assessment of the consequences and value associated with increased bicycle use.

Learning methods and activities

The course is delivered through two intensive sessions, each lasting four days. These sessions combine lectures and seminar activities with site visits to examine infrastructure and planning solutions. Between the sessions, participants are expected to continue their studies independently, including syllabus reading, exercises, and assignments.

Experts will contribute to lectures and site visits, sharing practical experience and knowledge from real-world situations and infrastructure projects.

Participation in lectures and site visits is mandatory in order to take the exam.
