About the course
Course content
The course gives basic insight to different kinds of source material that give an understanding to how life and society went through social, economic and cultural changes from the past to our own era. The course emphases on problematizing and argumentation, with relevant theory, methods and analysis
The course will also focus on the interaction between archaeology as a discipline, the present time and society.
The course content for ARK2001 form an important basis for ARK2003 Bachelor thesis in archaeology.
Learning outcome
Knowledge:
The candidate
- has basic knowledge of the archaeological research process.
- has elaborate knowledge of selected archaeological research questions.
- has broad understanding of the relation between theory, empirical data, method and analysis.
Skills:
The candidate
- can explain the relation between archaeology, society and the present time.
- can analyze and discuss how different archaeologists and archaeologies have interpreted material culture.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures, seminars, exercises, visits to exhibitions and self-studies.
Mandatory activities
Participation in teaching with a minimum 3/4 attendance.
Compulsory assignments

- Home assignment
Further on evaluation
A home assignment of around 2500 words (Times New Roman 12 pt Line spacing 1.5).
Please note that exams may be based on classes and exercises.
