Course content

Working life is characterized by an increased focus on the importance of language as a professional tool. A workplace may be described as an arena for communication where different tasks and projects need to be solved through or by means of communication.
The aim of this course is to give students insight into communicative patterns, processes and challenges in life at work. It gives insight into how communication patterns in the workplace contribute toward including and excluding, toward creating hierarchies or diminishing these. Such knowledge is a central premise for handling diversity and patterns of interaction in new and productive ways.

Learning outcome

KNOWLEDGE

Through this course the student will gain:
- Knowledge about how one may describe communication in the workplace
- Understanding of connections between various kinds of professional activities and their characteristic communication patterns
- Knowledge about strategies which can change patterns for participation and communication

SKILLS

Through this course the student will learn to:
- Use certain chosen concepts and categories to observe and describe premises for communication and consequences of communication in a workplace
- Use his or her own competence to give qualified advice and contributions in relation to communication processes at hand
- Contribute to a new way of thinking by imparting scientific knowledge in an inspiring and productive manner

Learning methods and activities

Lectures and exercises. Attendance on minimum 3 seminars is obligatory.

Compulsory assignments

  • Short oral presentation
  • Particiapation in at least 3 activities
  • 1 written assignment (4-6 pages)

Course materials

The curriculum consists of articles, book chapters as well as material used in class (e.g. handouts, notes and empirical material). It is important to participate in lectures in order to profit fully from such material.
