Course content
This course is designed for students that are enrolled in a PhD program . It provides ind-epth knowledge on maintenance and operation of roads in cold climates. The course consists of a guided self-study on road salting, tire-pavement friction, road meteorology and the organisation of winter maintenance. In addition the candidate performs a project on a topic that is connected to maintenance and operation of roads.
Learning outcome
Knowledge
The candidate should have detailed knowledge of:
- how salt works in anti- and deicing
- Friction mechanisms that occur during tire-pavement interaction
- How road surface conditions change due to meteorological processes
- understand the relation between weather, traffic and winter maintenance
Skills
The candidate is able to:
- Conduct a project in a systematic manner
- demonstration analytical skills
General competence
The candidate can:
- Understand and utilize scientific litterature on this topic
- Write about this topic in a scientific way
Learning methods and activities
Tutorial study and a project work. The project work counts for 2/3 of the grade. To pass the course a score of at least 70 percent is required.
