Course content

The course is based on BI 1001, and covers the connection between structure and function on organ- and organism level. The animal physiology part provides an introduction to animal adaptation to different environments. The candidate has good current physiological knowledge of general physiological principles, organ physiology and regulatory mechanisms and master key physiological mechanisms involved in selected groups adaptions to different environments. The course is part of the 1-year module in biology. Admission is restricted. A small number of places are available for students that want only this course.

Learning outcome

Learning goals
After finishing the course the students should have good insight into the relation between structure and function at organ and organism level. The student also should have knowledge about how animals adapt to different environments. The learning goals regarding knowledge, skills and general competence are as follows:
Knowledge
The student should have knowledge about
- the distinctive character and history of the subject
- how animals function in their natural habitat and the environmental challenges
- the structure and function of organ systems in various animals
- central methods in studying zoo physiological problems
- how to get updated within the subject of zoo physiology
Skills
The student should:
- be able to acquire knowledge from within the central subjects of zoo physiology
- mastering subject related tools , methods and ways of expression
- have basic skills in conducting a zoo physiological experiment
- have experience in analysing and interpretation of physiological information
- do project work alone or as a part of a group
- reflect over his/hers performance as a professional physiologist
General competence
The student can:
- collect physiological data and present them in a summarized way
- present core curriculum in writing
- handle biological material

Further on evaluation

All assessment components included in the course must be passed. In the case of 'fail' or 'retake', the final written examination needs to be taken again. Appeals for reassessment apply to the final written examination only. The individual components will not be graded and assessment consists of an overall final grade. The written exam can be changed to an oral exam in the semester when the course is not taught.
Supplementary regulations UTF §5-6 at NTNU applicable for re-sit examinations (oral and written) in science courses are:
1. Final examination in each semester -for courses with prefix BI, IT and KJ a final examination is held during the examination period every semester.
2. New assessment incase of “fail” - please refer to the course description for details on which components of the course need to be retaken in case of re-assessment.
