About

About the course

Course content

This laboratory course includes an introduction to methods for studying exposure and effects of environmentally disturbing chemical compounds. Attendance of the intensive lab course (planned after the Easter holidays) is obligatory. The student must write 2-3 independent lab reports (all need to be approved) and perform an independent writing project (on a chosen topic within environmental toxicology) and an oral presentation of the project. The final lab report (40%), written project (50%) and oral presentation (10%) all count towards the end score.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The course gives an introduction to scientific practices that are used when studying exposure and effects of environmental pollutants on biological systems (from molecular to ecosystem level).

Skills:

The course will provide experience in easy to use methods to detect environmental pollutants and their effects in biological systems, simple statistical methods and evaluation of obtained results, and written and oral presentation.

General competence:

The candidate has competence in handling of chemicals, including knowledge of health and safety in the lab, understands common methods used in environmental toxicology and related environmental problems.

Learning methods and activities

Exercises and seminars

Project (semester task): mandatory

Laboratory course: 30 hours, mandatory.

Compulsory assignments

  • Approved project work
  • Approved laboratory course

Further on evaluation

The assessment will be based on 2 lab reports (counting 20% each towards the final grade) and a written semester assignment (30%) followed by an oral presentation (30%).

All assessment components included in the course must be passed. The individual parts of the course will be graded, with one overall grade in the end. In the case of 'failure' or 'retake', the lab report or written project needs to be delivered again. Appeals for reassessment apply to the final lab report and written project only. Obligatory activities from the previous year will be approved if the course is retaken.

Specific conditions

Required previous knowledge

Must either take the course TBI4110 at the same time or have completed the theoretical introduction in TBI4110 before.

Course materials

Lab booklet and scientific literature.
