Course - Advanced Physiology - BI3024
Advanced Physiology
New from the academic year 2025/2026
Assessments and mandatory activities may be changed until September 20th.
About
About the course
Course content
This course studies comparative physiology in order to compare physiological mechanisms/processes and functional organization in animals and plants. In order to obtain a deep understanding of animal and plant physiology, scientific papers, recently published in the field of animal and plant physiology will be discussed. The following topics will be included: metabolism, endocrinology, osmoregulation, neuro- and sensory physiology, molecular and cellular physiology. Students will present current research literature in seminars and an active contribution to discussions is expected.
Learning outcome
On completion of the course the students should be familiar with physiological processes and the relation between structure and function. The learning goals regarding knowledge, skills and general competence are as follows:
With the assigned reading material and discussions in seminars the student should obtain a deep understanding of:
- Recent research development within animal and plant physiology.
- The molecular and cellular mechanisms of physiology.
- Mechanisms that enable animal and plant adaptations.
The student should have the skill set to be able to:
- Acquire information about physiology at an advanced level.
- Present physiology at an advanced level.
- Formulate and discuss advanced physiological problems based on acquired knowledge.
- Discuss comparative physiology based on acquired knowledge.
The student should have general competence in:
- Communicating and presenting original research within a specific area of physiology.
- Discussing and applying acquired knowledge in new areas of physiology.
Learning methods and activities
Lectures and seminars (mandatory): 36 hours.
There will be an oral examination at the end of the spring semester.
Compulsory assignment: Approved participation in seminars
Compulsory assignments
- Seminar attendance
Further on evaluation
Final examination is an oral exam. To be able to take the exam you must pass the compulsory assignment.
In case of fail or the student wishes to improve their grade it is possible to sign up for a new final exam both spring and autumn semester.
