Course content

The course gives an introduction to aquaculture. It covers several types of organisms that are farmed in water. The farming procedures for selected species are described. Also the requirements that the organisms have, and how farmers can satisfy these requirements. Other fields are also covered: Environmental effects of aquaculture, aquaculture growth potential, innovation examples. The course has emphasis on salmonids and salmonid farming.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

The candidate will be able to describe:

todays status and future potential for the aquaculture sector;

how to perform aquaculture of selected species (salmon in particular;

methods and equipment that are used in aquaculture;

methods to maintain animal welfare.

  

Skills:

The candidate will:

be able to write lab reports on scientific format;
be able to use program for analysis of own data;
can dissect, and take samples from salmon;
can perform other selected laboratory tasks.



Competence:

The candidate will:

have sufficient background to assess project work and new products within aquaculture;
be able to communicate with experts within aquaculture.

Learning methods and activities

Pedagogiske metoder:

Lectures (40 hours). Excursions to aquaculture companies (10 hours). Laboratory course (20 hours). Course material will be presented within a new digital framework.     

Obligatoriske arbeidskrav:

Mandatory laboratory course (20 hours).Mandatory guest lectures.Mandatory field trips to aquaculture farms. The students must produce written reports form lab work and form field trips, and the reports are to be approved.
