Course content

This course focus on building basic skills and knowledge to begin to work independently in studios and workshops aswell as collaborative skills to develop collective projects.

Experimentation, process and reflection are core element of the Bachelor in fine art studies and artistic work. the beginning of the course. In the first semester the students will aquire.

The student will begin to develop a personal artistic practice in dialogue with first and second supervisor. Artistic practice and presentation of works through exhibitions is a central component for learning.

Learning outcome

When finishing the course the student will:

• Have become familiar with the contemporary art discourse that is ongoing at The Trondheim Academy of Fine Art.
• Know about key concepts of Art history
• Have acquired skills to participate in group work, and reflect in a collective artistic work frame.
• Be able to initiate the development of an individual art practice by testing out different media and methods.

Learning methods and activities

Introduction to NTNU and to the academy. Start-up workshop (can be with an external course leader, guest artist, curator, etc). Students work in small groups both inside and outside the academy. Key words: collaboration, group discussion, experimentation, process.

Parallel, intensive introduction courses in the use of the workshops and facilities. Participation in these courses is mandatory in order to gain access to the facilities in the future.

Tutorials with main supervisor and second supervisor, and development of an individual art project. Group critique in the shape of meetings with fellow students and supervisors.

Supervision is documented and documentation is exchanged between supervisors and students to support the student progression.

Preparation procedure for the 1st year show including shared coordination, individual tutorial and art theoretical perspectives in relation to key concepts and movements in contemporary art.

Excursions can be arranged as part of the teaching of the course. The course leader will inform the students if the excursion is obligatory or optional at the start of the semester. Obligatory excursions will be free of cost for all students. Students who participate in optional excursions must expect to pay a small share of the expenses. For students who do not participate in optional excursions, an alternative will be offered.

Participation in learning activities such as supervision, group critiques and course specific seminars and projects is mandatory.

Required previous knowledge

To be admitted to the Academy of Fine Art through the application process: evaluation of submitted portfolios, evaluation of earlier studies in art at pre-school or similar: interview and/or practical entrance exam.
