Course content

• Load calculation and structural safety
• statics
• ethical and environmental consequences of products and solutions
within construction

Learning outcome

The candidate can:
• the safety rules in "Reliability requirements", "Self loads and payloads", "Snow loads" and "Wind loads" according to NS-EN.
• find forces and resultant forces.
• calculate statically determined and indefinite constructions;
• understand the principle of independence, stability.
• constructions composed of joints.
• understand professionalism.
• understand the function of the center of gravity.
• first and second area torque.
• calculate stresses due to axial force, bending moment and
shear in beams and frames
• calculate bending deformations.
• understand statically indeterminate / specific constructions.
• crack formulas without torque.
• understand the main tension principle.

General competence:
The candidate:
• can present their results
• Master relevant subject expressions and can collaborate with other professionals.
• get an introduction to the basis for finding the loads a structure can take and safety considerations in general.
• has insight into current standards adapted to European cargo standards, published by the Norwegian Standardization Association

Learning methods and activities

• lectures and exercises in load calculation and in statics
• exercises on digital models for understanding and
innovative expertise

Compulsory activities:
• 7 mandatory written work requirements. 3 on load calculation and 4
on statics.

Assessment form and rating scale:
• written exam -4 hours. Letter grades A to F
• Compulsory written work requirements: approved before the exam

Specific conditions

Exam registration requires that class registration is approved in the same semester. Compulsory activities from previous semester may be approved by the department.

Admission to a programme of study is required:
Civil Engineering (BIBYGG)
