Course content

In geology the students will get an understanding of the construction and processes on the earth which have changed and still change the earth.

In geotechnics the student can understand the use of soil as an engineering material, and consider and solve geotechnical problems and participate in discussions about both normal and difficult soil conditions.

  • Geological processes
  • Classification of minerals and rocks
  • Quaternary Geology and formation of soil
  • climate and avalanches
  • the property and composition of soil
  • stresses and change of stresses in soil
  • stiffness parameters of soil
  • Settlement under foundations and fillings
  • Ground-water flow
  • load carrying capacity
  • earth pressure
  • stability of slopes and cuts

Learning outcome

Knowledge: The student should have knowledge on - The condition of the earth crust with special emphasize on Norwegian conditions - The evolution of soil and rock types - Properties of soil and rocks as a consequence of how these are created - Classification and identification of soil - Stresses, earth pressure, settlements and stability - Hydrologic flow through the soil Skills: The student can: - Identify and consider the properties of Norwegian minerals and rock types based on how these are created - Calculate stresses and settlements below embankments and foundations - Calculate the ground-water flow and draw power grid - Identify and consider the stability of slopes based on geometry, firmness and inner/outer water pressure condition - Calculate earth pressure and power towards foundation wall and sheet pile curtain in deeper excavation - Consider how intervention i ground affect the security of buildings - calculate necessary width of foundation to resist loads General competence The student: - have knowledge about geology and the evolution of rocks and soils to be able to identify and estimate their characteristics and consider deposition and different soil materials based on terrain formations . - can perform simple laboratory tests

Learning methods and activities

Digital string: Use of spreadsheet for simulations Ethic string: Ethical relations concerning security and economy Lecture, guidance and practical work. Mainly focus on guidance and practical work. A sample of prerecorded lectures and practical work will cover most of the contents in this subject. 6 compulsory work Laboratory work

Compulsory assignments

  • Obligatoriske arbeidskrav -se emnebeskrivelsen

Further on evaluation

Re-sit of written exam in August. The re-sit exam can be changed from written to oral examination. Compulsory activity from earlier semester can be approved by the department.
