Course content

Linear 1st order theory for bucling columns and 2D frames. Basis for calculating arcs and curved constructions. Introduction to fracture load calculations. Matrix methods for plane frames. Buckling solved by matrix methods. Use of data tools.

Learning outcome

Knowledge about: - Linear 1st order theory of buckling. - Static behavior for curved beams. - Fracture load calculation for beams and simple frames in the plane. - Energy principles such as virtual work and stationary potential energy for two-dimensional frames. - Matrix methods applied on frames and trusses. - Bucling of columns solved by matrix methods. - Definition of plates and shells, and simple calculations of such components. - Use of data tools. Skill: - Be able to calculate forces and bending moments on curved and slanted beams in wood. - Be able to calculate the capasity and stiffness for slant and curved beams in wood according to the rules of the eurocode. - Be able to calculate fracture load on beams. - Be able to calculate strength and stiffness of simple frames and truss structures. - Be able to calculate larger structures with data tools. - Be able to solve simple plane and shell structures by hand. - Be able to apply computer programs for the subject. General competence: The candidate should be able to model and analyze frame constructions in 3D and to some extent shell design and optimization of the solutions with respect to material use and environment. - The candidate will be able to participate in discussions in engineering design and share knowledge and experiences with others.
