About the course

Course content

The course addresses methodologies for dance analysis as developed both on a general basis, within certain fields of dance research and within different dance genres. We discuss the theoretical basis for dance notation and for analysing various aspects for dance accessed for instance through dance movement, dance works and dance events.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:An examinee with completed qualification in DANS3003
*has knowledge about the theoretical basis for different aspects of dance analysis
*has knowledge about how dance manifests itself and can analyse different manifestations for instance dance as movement in its different techniques, dance as work for the stage or as social dance
*has theoretical basis for conducting advanced movement analysis

Skills:An examinee with completed qualification in DANS3003
*can structure, organise and analyse dance material through systematic source criticism
*can relate critically to the range of available material and conduct efficient source search
*can apply theory and methodology to the work with dance analysis
*has practical skills for analysing and interpreting different kinds of dance documentation, for instance notation or film

General competence:An examinee with completed qualification in DANS3003
*is able to work independently with a relevant academic material
*is able to combine practical skills, theory and methodologies in analysis

Learning methods and activities

Intensive classes with lectures, seminars and practical methodological exercises. Minimum required participation/attendance in class for Choreomundus students: At least 70%.

Dance Studies (MDANS)

Required previous knowledge

Requires admission to Nordic Master in Dance Studies (NO-MA-DS) or Erasmus Mundus Master in Dance Knowledge, Practice and Heritage (Choreomundus).
