About the course

Course content

The course gives an introduction to specific aesthetic and methodological perspectives. The focus lies on the connection between theoretical and methodological strategies, with the aim to provide the student with proper tools to place their Masters project within an aesthetic and academic discourse.

Learning outcome

Knowledge

Through reflection upon methodological and scientific perspectives connected to artistic research and research as art, the students will be prepared for academic and artistic research. Thus, the planning and framing of the master thesis will be in focus.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have knowledge about

  • relevant research methods and scientific perspectives with a special focus om performative/art-based methods, qualitative methods, and methods connected to contemporary and historical art/cultural phenomena.
  • ethical research challenges, standards for use of sources and demands for handling informants in research.

Skills

Upon completion of this course, students will know how to

  • analyze and interpret theories and subject matters in drama and theatre, and identify scientific positions.
  • argue for choices of design and method in their own research and developmental projects.
  • make an evaluation of technical term and practice based on philosophy of science and aesthetic theory.

Learning methods and activities

Instruction is offered in the form of lectures and seminars.

The course also offers a seminar series for master students to develop their own master project.

Students are required to keep posted on messages from the department or teacher at Blackboard. Teaching is usually conducted in Norwegian but may take place in English.

Further on evaluation

The final assessment in this subject consists of a home exam and a written assessment.

More about the home exam: On the basis of the syllabus, a 6-day home exam of 4,000 - 5,000 words is given with an adjusting oral exam. The number of words does not include the cover page, foreword, table of contents, bibliography and appendices. The number of words must be added to the assignment, and it is the student's responsibility that the number of words given is correct. The home exam counts for 80 % of the total grade.

More about the thesis: The student must deliver a processed and finalized project description of the master's thesis. The assignment counts for 20 % of the total grade.
